from Jim Jones

I just received this fantastic email from Jim Jones

Why can't you eastcoasties just go out and have fun and
not self-promote? To me your just another dime a dozen
transplant gumming up the west, Appalachian mts, what
a joke. Don't bother responding I won't read your sillyness.

Its an interesting email for me to receive, makes me question
myself and my motivations.

But what I find funny is him dissing the appalachian mts, what do
they have to do with my eastcoastie antics? They were where my
adventures began, I had so many great times running around the
"Hills" in our backyard. No huge alpine, no thoughts of avalanches,
but regardless lots of great exploration onskis and foot. This comment
makes his email seem more petty.

And yes I do self-promote but I also share and inspire, I hope my
stuff does not come off as egotistical self promotion but more as a
sharing of incredible experiences.

Should I give everyone Jim Jones email and maybe you people can
email him and perhaps he will listen to your silliness?

Apart from that lots has been happening, down in Nelson for the
Coldsmoke festival, a wicked ski down the Face of Ymir with lots of
slough and alpen glow and then some deep powder skiing up the
Asulkan with the Jupiter traverse.

The powder has returned and rejuvenated our psych. 405 000ft

dude. there are always unhappy people who will try to bring others down. if sharing what you do inspires just one person to get off the couch, and enjoy this wonderful world we live in, it’s worth all the negative comments that all the unhappy people in the world can come up with, if you are able to ignore them. perhaps he is jealous that you have found a way for your passion to pay for your fun…

Who TF is Jim Jones and why does his gramatically and spelling challenged drivel matter?

I hate this retread EC/WC crap. And on top of that the "transplant" comment? Please!

For me, it is all about delivering solid content. Self promotion only becomes an issue when it drowns out the content. Your blog is almost 100% content and rarely involves any unusual self promotion. Keep doing what your doing, ignore the peanut gallery.

Jim is bored with himself and his life so he seeks out others to make himself feel more important and less worthless. He has a sad sad road ahead of him. Keep the great stories coming Greg, and those of us Eastcoasties who don’t get to experience the beautiful mountains everyday, can at least live them through your posts which are truly inspirational. Cheers!!

Greg, that’s funny stuff. Jim won’t respond anyway. He/she/it is basically a kneejerk troll.

It probably won’t surprise you that John Baldwin (lived in BC his whole life) has gotten some hate mail about his book also. When i get this kind of stuff I file it under G for Garbage.

Too bad I didn’t win the CMH trip as I was looking forward to your cooking!

Ignore this guy. The beauty of the internet is that if he thinks your site is too self promotional he can simply stop visiting. As for myself, I’m going to keep visiting.

  7. Paul March 12, 2010 at 1:49 am

Greg, mate, don’t listen to his tosh. I for one have benefited immensely from you blog. It’s many things to many people but I cannot see how it could in any way be construed as having a negative impact. Keep posting or I won’t know where to go next!! Haha

  8. jv March 12, 2010 at 3:34 am

    what a biatch!

  9. James March 12, 2010 at 3:46 am

Greg, I think you do a great job with your posts and I enjoy reading your trip reports. Everyone gets bad press now and again, but you’re doing an awesome job. I wish I could climb and ski like you do, keep up the good work!

  10. Adam March 12, 2010 at 5:00 am

Sounds like a butthurt poser to me.

  11. Jack March 12, 2010 at 6:11 am

Hey! The only motivational question I’ve got fer ya, Greg is: Where is the STOKE from ColdSMOKE?

Grow a thicker skin, and STOKE on with some wild and woolly Ymir, please.

I wish Jim had a blog I could goto and get inspired and aspire too! What a loser.

Move on. Nothing to see here 🙂

I wonder if Jimmy’s family came over the Bering land bridge?

  14. Gideon March 12, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Ha this is funny. I was born and raised in Nelson. I grew up skiing all the mountains in the southern interior. I moved away about eight years ago largely because of the "raddest local" attitude, both from east coast transplants and long term locals. Canada is still one of the least populated places to ski. Everyone who loves the outdoors needs to stop thinking they are the only, best, coolest, whatever, and learn to enjoy the things they love with others who love them too. As Tom Winter puts it in this article "everyone is a local somewhere." http://bit.ly/cOaTpa

Greg, Jim Jones has been leaving notes all over the place. Don’t think you’re special for receiving his piss&vinegar 😉

He scrawled this recently on Mt.Washington:

    Stoke on!

  16. q March 12, 2010 at 7:18 pm

He’s got a point on the self promote issue, not for Mr. Hill as he’s definely pushing the limits and showing what’s possible. But I can’t say the same for others like

Mr Rubens – Does anyone care about your in-bound skiing? or your pole length?

Mr. Lee – This guy gets lost going up Balu !!?!! Really. I recall him slagging Greg for skiing in one day what he’d do in a wknd. Come on don’t you have something better to do with your time then blog about your very typical ski/bike days? After all it’s not like your doing anything extraordinary

I’m sure there’s many more. Although not totally relevant, this is great:

To go out and have fun in nature is a right we all have – to place that information up for others to enjoy and benefit from only makes sense. It is only ‘sillyness’ if you are threatened by it. The more we know the better we are for it.

i’m from ontario so maybe jonesy will listen to me hahaha…i learned of greg through an article in skican or some skiing magazine, and was super enthralled by the backcountry tour he gave, on which the author wrote his story. He did a good job of plugging greg’s site and blog and i’ve been an avid reader ever since. Certainly promotion has played a direct role in my finding this site, and since I view it as THE most inspirational blog i have ever read, I’d say it’s a good thing. So why is Greg Hill, a person I have never met, nor spoken/email with, so important? As I’m sure many would agree, the reasons are numerous, so I’ll just talk about a few (or try to group them haha)

I’ll direct these to greg himself <that’s a note for grammar junkies

    1) you are an excellent ski/adventure writer. Clearly a ski mag reader, and definitely a reader in general, I love dreaming and getting lost, in the past mostly in pictures, but thanks to greg more and more with words and video. The adventures you undertake, historic peaks toured and climbed, all written in succinct prose ripe with language of the mountains. Accompanied by pictures and video that show the paths taken and even some epic descents, there are certainly no adventure writers I’ve come across with a better knack for dolling out jaw dropping tales.

    2) part of the jaw drop might be the second reason greg hill kicks ass: his endurance, determination, and craving to push himself ever further has been truly a source of great inspiration for me. Everyone has their ups and downs, good days and bad, but few people would (and even fewer could) do what greg does on a seemingly daily basis. and the kicker is he loves doing it! as someone who has competed in endurance races in the form of triathlons, I understand the excruciating pain that is caused when even the most fit body is pushed to its limits, and to want to speed ski up and down a mountain for time just to see how fast you could go is certainly indicative of a rare personality. Greg pushes me to get in better shape, even if i’m mainly doing so I can be ready for a trip out west, I still find myself summoning the live spirit of greg hill, telling myself he’s been through exponentially worse…that I definitely have more, much more, left in the tank.

    3) Greg, whether inadvertently or not, has taught me a lot about the mountains and mountaineering. I’m constantly looking up various terms and jargon he uses just to make sure I know exactly what he’s talking about. I feel more comfortable climbing the 200 ft niagara escarpment already!

    4) Greg comes off as an awesome dude, i’d say he is an awesome dude, but i’m talking specifically about his writing, and, like I said, i only know him through his blog. and his website. and like a bunch of videos, including the semi-bio-pic short film from the banff film fest. I feel like I know him pretty well, and am quite sure his family and friends have only great things to say about him! To me this is the major flaw in jones?maybe is his name"’s argument, since my learning about mr. hill has made him that much more of an inspiration. juggling a family with the amount of skiing he does is something I hope to achieve in marriage and fatherhood, doing something you love and the sacrifices made and lengths gone to in pursuit of never ending dreams is something anyone can look up to, nevermind a wannabe ski bum from southern ontario such as myself…man, to me, you have already changed my life.

    thank you!

    wowsers!

thanks Julian. I am at a loss as to what to write or say so I guess I will continue doing what I do.
The latest movie will be up soon

You need not bother or feed trolls like Jim.
I find your blog very inspiring. Keep up the good work and keep focusing on all the rewarding aspects of ski touring!
