Finally home!
Finally home after 26 hours of driving. So we drove for 52 hours, raced for 23 hours and spent the other four days getting organized and ready for the race. Quite the week that’s for sure.
The race went well, I felt great for most of it and seemed well on par to break my record. Then when I finally lapped Eric I decided to slow down and do a few laps with him. At this point my motivation disappeared. After 19 hours of hiking with 47000 feet of climbing I was beginning to lag on the whole excitement. Although it seemed I had a new record in my sights I lost all impetus once I had assured myself with 1st place.
The altitude may have also played a role in my total body shut down. Three days prior to the race I was feeling winded at 9000 feet and a little light headed. I mainly spend my time touring from 1600-9000 feet rarely spending hours at the higher elevations. So simply driving down and then trying to race from 8300-9800 feet would be very hard. Which is why I tried to spend at least two days above 9000. Not much of an acclimatization but it was all the time I had.
One day was in the mountains above Ogden and then the other was in the Wasatch. The low snow year was a little disappointing, i felt bad for all those that love to ski and had obviously had a poor snow year. I hope the rest of the season improves for those down here.
Where was I going with this. All went well I won the race and apart from some pins and needles in my feet I feel great. A successful trip.
I am looking forward to getting back on my mission. I can’t wait to get out and ski some fresh powder off some of my favorite peaks. Whenever I travel away I am always re-energized by my home mountain ranges, there is soo much to ski and so much snow. Not many areas I have skied in have this diversity with such an amazing quantity of great lines to ski.
Killin it
I’ll have some photos in a couple of hours but this race is pretty nuts. Frank here. I’m his support team. Gregs racing hard but pacing himself. I’ve heard from other competitors that he’s talking on his way up as others are white in the face and having a hard time breathing. He’s drinking lots and eating fruit bars, beef chunks, energy gel packs and looking great. Its still early in the game but his positive vibe is shinning. The sun is bright, he’s in second place and doesnt have a worry on his mind. I’ll check back in in a bit hopefully with some photos. I’m hanging out with Lou Dawson and he’s updating his blog as well, you should have a look at wildsnow.com , later.
Greg passed the 10k mark awhile ago. He’s got a bloody nose and hand. He says that now he’s bored. 5 hours in and only 19 to go. The sun’s going down and its getting cold. He’s about 8 minutes behind the leader, he says he’s not concerned.
getting ready
Leaving everything to the last minute is always way more fun!
